- Splendid buildings, elaborately renovated towns and a lively architectural scene of the present: a journey through Saxony illustrates the great treasure of this cultural landscape. World-famous buildings such as, the Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady), the Dresden Zwinger and the Semper Opera House lure visitors into the region just as much as the delicate and elegant village churches in the Ore Mountains. Atmospheric cityscapes in such places as Leipzig, Görlitz, Zwickau, Zittau, Torgau and Meissen make history from the Middle Ages to the present day tangible. Fascinating industrial architecture in Chemnitz and Leipzig testify to the great industrial history of Saxony. The great Leipzig trade-fair palaces or the garden city of Hellerau in Dresden, a centre of reform culture with pan-European appeal, are symbols of the cultural dawn of Modernity. And Saxony has a rich heritage of the classical Modernism of the Weimar Republic: outstanding buildings such as the Schminke House in Löbau or the former Schocken department store in Chemnitz testify to the variety of modern expression. After heavy destruction in the war, the laborious reconstruction of the cities started, partly in brilliant reconstruction achievements, but also in a policy of turning away from historical building substance. And yet these achievements are also part of the historical heritage, whether it is the Old Market and Prager Strasse in Dresden, the modern urban landscape in Chemnitz or the Gewandhaus, the opera house and the former university tower in Leipzig. On the one hand, the present is characterized by a committed conservation of monuments; on the other, as in the case of Dresden’s New Market, by the reconstruction of a ruined historical cityscape. Above all, however, it is varied creativity and innovation that determine architecture in today’s Saxony. With its overview and numerous in-depth examinations, this publication presents Saxony’s extremely rich architectural heritage and invites visitors on new journeys of discovery through this fascinating cultural landscape.
