- Abstract (DE)
- Abstract (EN)
- The article would like to argue in favour of the possibility of applying the way of thinking of ›Satzmodell‹ analysis, which has become established in German-speaking music theory discourse, to music outside European/Western traditions. It is shown that polyphonic structures in a certain type of Japanese koto music (the so-called »Kôtei-Nijûsô«), which have not yet been satisfactorily described, can be given a detailed interpretation which, drawing largely on the »emic« self-description of the culture in question, is able to dispense with borrowings from Western music theory. The analysis is based on passages from Mitsuzaki Kengyô’s Godan-ginuta, written in the 19th century, towards the end of the Tokugawa period, but before the reopening of Japan. This work for two kotos (and voice) draws the radical consequences, as it were, of the tendency already evident in Jiuta-Sôkyoku (the musical tradition in which Godan-ginuta stands) to organise the relationship between the main voice and the heterophonic accompaniment ever more freely. Following an overview of historical models – heterophonic models – especially those of Mitsuzaki Kengyô’s teacher Yaezaki Kengyô, there is an examination of their transformation and complex combination by Mitsuzaki Kengyô, which in part no longer directly reveals the heterophonic background.
