Abstract (EN)

This cumulative dissertation captures the critical role investment decision-making, performance measurement, and governance in impact investing play in maximizing impact generation. The first research article takes on investor intentionality in the (pre)-investment phase to provide a differentiated view on the motivations and decision criteria of different types of impact investors. The second research article assesses a performance metric that can quantify impact and make it comparable across multiple ventures while simultaneously giving insights into the relationship between impact and financial success. Lastly, the third research article discusses how corporate governance strategies can be used to reduce the risk of mission drift and strengthen impact contribution at investor level. This work contributes to a nuanced understanding of the normative dimensions of the re-conceptualizing of impact investing - intentionality, measurability, and contribution – by highlighting how these can be leveraged to strengthen impact generation. Moreover, it offers impact investors and social enterprises tools to foster impact creation through the investor-investee interface.
