- Bach, Mendelssohn, Clara and Robert Schumann, Wagner, Grieg, Lortzing, Mahler, Eisler... The list reads like a Who’s Who of music history – and it doesn’t end there. All these musicians and composers lived or worked in Leipzig and made the city a mecca for music fans. It still is, as the city’s many renowned ensembles and orchestras attest: from the Gewandhausorchester and the MDR Symphony Orchestra to the world-famous St. Thomas Boys Choir and the Leipzig Opera, one of Europe’s oldest civic music theatres. The city is also home to a ballet company and the Musical Comedy Theatre. Not to be missed: Our festivals Highlights for June 2025 include the Shostakovich Festival and, as every year, the Leipzig Bachfest, this year under the theme of TRANSFORMATION. In autumn, there is once again the annual Mendelssohn Festival to enjoy. And it’s worth making a note now of the 2026 Leipzig Opera Festival, LORTZING 26 (more on our music festivals from page 8).
