- This dissertation comprises four manuscripts on professional football club ownership with a dedicated focus on institutional investors. The work examines the motives, impact, and strategies of this investor class, which is cur-rently gaining importance. The first chapter provides an introduction to the research topic, demonstrates the need for these studies, and briefly summarizes the results and contribution of each manuscript and the dissertation in its entirety. The second chapter consists of manuscript A, which provides a systematic and comprehensive overview of the relevant academic research in the field of investors in professional football, while the third chapter presents manuscript B, which focuses on the empirical, statistical impact of institutional ownership on the financial and sporting performance of football clubs. The subsequent two chapters contain the manuscripts C and D, which focus on the business models and strategies of different types of institutional investors. Manuscript C analyzes financially driven investors, and manuscript D assesses Middle East state funds using the example of the Qatar Investment Authority acquiring Paris St. Germain.
